Homeschooling/Unschooling: Colors

Hey all!

So, we decided to use some of Choca's Captain America Fruit Snacks to go over her colors.  We had a great time, and we have a video to prove it. This video shows why patience is SO very important when homeschooling a young child!! HAHA!

I love things other than crayons to teach her colors.  As you can see, it tried and true over here!!

What things do you use to teach your children their colors???

Questions: CharlottesAvenue@gmail.com
Comments: Leave them here!! :)

Keep Watching,

<3 <3 this lil girl... her giggle make me giggle. LOL. Aside for the fact that she is super cute, she is so smart.

I used to always use the color of an item with the item when I would talk to my children to help them learn to associate things.

Thank you for sharing your techniques of teaching ChocaBaby.

Michelle G * HAHAH!!! :) Thank you so much!! :)

I love using the color of an item with the item to teach her how to associate things. Daddy does that all the time with her. We have our different teaching styles, but it works! :)

You are more than welcome, Sis! Thank you for commenting! :) <3

She is so smart and obviously she gets it from you because I used to home school my children and I never thought about using food (fruit snacks) as a way to teach, that was brilliant thanks for the idea LOL!

When my kids were younger I used everything possible to teach my kids their colors, shapes, numbers, adding and everything. You are doing a wonderful job with your baby she is so smart and pretty!!

Beautiful and smart! Watch out, world! :) We used to play a game where i would pick a color and they would bring me things around the house of that color. Then we would reverse it and they would pick the color. Also, I spy with colors is fun, and you can do it anywhere.

Elizabeth * THANK YOU!! :) -- I love that!! "I Spy" is a great one, mami!! Haven't played that one with her yet... -- We love to play, "Punch Buggy".... Everytime we see a VW Bug, we scream out PUNCH BUGGY (and whatever color the car is)... She loves that one... That's one she plays with her sisters and she adores it!! :)

Thank you for sharing... I Spy is about to be a huge one over here!! :)

Awww, I love me some Choca!

I use anything I can think of to review Baby O's colors with her. The colors of the floor tiles we're walking on, the traffic lights, colors of cars when we're stuck in traffic, colors of food...it's a big world out there full of opportunities to teach! <3

Your doing a great job she is so clever. When we taught gg her colours in English we used anything and everything to teach her her colours, now that she knows them in english I have started teaching her in Greek and I teach her the colour with an object she is familar with in Greek too so if she gets stuck when I say the object in Greek too it seems to remind her plus she is not only learning colours in Greek but also objects in Greek too bonus(",)

ggmix * Thank you so much!! Yaaaaaaay for learning objects...And dual languages! That's always fun!! Choca calls out everything she sees, and does the sign for it if she knows it (sign language).... She's coming along! :)

When I go shopping with my 2 year old son we walk through the produce and I point out different fruits and veggies and ask him where's the tomato and what color is the tomato. Also, when we drive we play the color game with cars. I pick a color and ask him to find and point to all the blue cars. I like to make learning a game so that it's fun.

JenJen * That's a great way to do it... The only way, in my opinion. When you make it FUN, they WANT to learn!! They find it exciting!! You seem like you're doing a fantastic job over there!! :)

I've been trying to come up with ways to help him come up to learn his colors...

I like to call him rain mane because he's 3 and already pretty good with his numbers, lol

Once Upon a Curl * Use fruits, veggies, Legos, Cars outside (those are always fun), etc... That works great for Choca along with everything else. She likes to point out everything and say its color. ESPECIALLY barrettes! :)

And numbers are great!! Choca is up to 25 and keeps trying to get more. She's trying to teach HERSELF money amounts!! HAHA...

That little diva is already ahead of the game but try teaching her colors with food such fruit and veggies. I even use candy once to help my 8 year old who then 3 to learn and she is a honor roll student now. When learning is fun but on their level, they tend to grasp it better.

yayamaof3 -- Thank you! We usually teach her with apples, oranges, kiwis, lemons, strawberries, spinach, carrots, broccoli, and butternut squash. We make a lot of smoothies over here, and she helps me with them , and in turn learns about math (how many apples, etc) colors, (what color is that banana?, etc), and sounds with the blender... It works wonders! :)

Thanks for sharing and congrats on your daughters honor roll status!! That's awesome! :)

It has been a long time since I taught my children their colors (they are 20 and 17) so I can't say that I remember what I used. Knowing me, I probably used everything from cups to cars to the sky and the grass to their clothes. I loved this video as it was very reminiscent of my days as a young mother. She's a doll and you are doing a wonderful job with her.
